Locations

A location is a place where you store things: fridge, freezer, cellar, cupboard, the back of the van.

Options → Locations.

The rule

Every item is stored somewhere, and there is always at least one location. The app will never leave you in a state where an item has nowhere to be.

Two visible consequences:

  • The last location cannot be deleted. The app offers to create another one first.
  • Deleting a location that holds items opens a screen asking where to move them. Nothing is deleted along the way: the items simply change place.

An empty location is deleted without question.

Two locations in the free version

The free version allows two locations per session — fridge and freezer, say: those of the first launch, which you rename as you like. The third is reserved for TrackInvent Pro, which has no limit. The limit only applies to creation: whatever a backup, a CSV import or iCloud bring beyond it stays readable and editable, never blocked or deleted. Deleting a location frees its place.

Item counts

The list shows, next to each location, how many items it holds.

Placing a location on the map

Edit a location, then Place on the map. Search for an address, or move the map under the crosshair: the centre is what counts, not where you put your finger — your finger hides the very thing you are aiming at. The arrow button at the bottom right brings the map under the device: to place the location you are standing in, all that is left is to confirm. Your position is requested at that moment and not kept.

It is optional. A location with no position works exactly as before.

What it is for

When you add an item, the location nearest to you is offered first. If you keep two stocks at two addresses, the one you are standing in is preselected without your having to think about it.

The comparison happens on the device, from a one-off reading. Your position is neither stored nor transmitted. Refusing access blocks nothing: the location offered is then the first in the list.

Beyond three hundred metres, no location is offered by proximity: at that distance, being "next to" something stops meaning anything.

Renaming

Tap a location to change its name. Items follow.

The QR label (TrackInvent Pro)

Tap the small QR next to the pencil (or swipe the location, or long-press › Label): a QR code with the location's name, to share (an image) or print, then stick on the shelf, the bin, the freezer door. It only holds an identifier — neither the name nor the stock.

Scanned with the Stock scanner, it filters the list on that location — a tour of the stockroom, shelf by shelf. During a chain scan, it changes the location things are put in: scan the shelf, then the products. Scanned with the iPhone's camera, it opens TrackInvent on that filter.
