Categories
A category describes what an item is — dairy, meat, tinned goods, consumables — independently of where it is stored.
Options → Categories.
Optional
An item may have no category at all. Categories help you find your way; they are not needed for the app to work.
Choosing, searching, creating from an item
The Category row of an item — when creating it as in its sheet — opens a sheet: the five most used first, all of them next, and a field to search. Type a name that does not exist: Create "…" appears, and the category is chosen on the spot — it is created when the item is saved, in the current session. No more misfiling, going to create it in Options, then coming back.
Managing them
The field at the top of the screen adds a category. Tap an existing one to rename it, swipe to delete it.
Deleting a category deletes no items: the items concerned simply end up without a category.
Created automatically
CSV import creates the categories it encounters when they are missing, matching yours by name, ignoring case.
Scanning a barcode (Pro) suggests the product's aisle — one of the food categories below, the most precise the Open Food Facts record allows — in the app's language, with no further network request. A product that fits no aisle stays without a category: better nothing than a foreign or overly specific one. A suggested aisle you do not have yet is marked "(new)" and gets created when you save.
Food categories
TrackInvent ships with about sixty kitchen aisles — Dairy products, Cheeses, Vegetables, Canned foods, Beverages, Frozen foods… — extracted from the Open Food Facts classification, in the app's language. They are never installed by default: someone storing workshop consumables or spare parts should not have to delete sixty kitchen categories. Three ways to ask for them:
- on first launch, a question — What will you store here? — : "Food" creates the aisles in the first session, "Something else" creates none;
- when creating a session (Options › Sessions), the Food categories switch, off by default;
- later, in Options › Categories, the carrot button: it adds the missing aisles, never duplicating the ones you already have (names are compared ignoring case and accents).
Once created, they are categories like any other: rename, delete, add.
These names come from the Open Food Facts taxonomy, a collaborative database published under the ODbL licence.
