Backup and restore

An FST configuration is set up once, often over a long time: labels adapted to the person, familiar pictures, routines, theme, speech rate. The backup puts all of it into a single file you can keep, send to another caregiver, or reinstall on a new device.

The screen lives in Settings → Backup & Restore — behind the caregiver lock when it is enabled.

What the file holds

  • The settings: sound, vibrations, speech rate, theme, caregiver lock.
  • The custom labels of every button.
  • The visual routines and their steps.
  • The custom pictures you imported, including the ones attached to routine steps.

The history is not included. It is a record of what the person expressed, not a setting: it has no place in a file meant to be passed around. To get it off the device, use the CSV share on the History screen.

Exporting

Tap Export configuration. The app prepares the file (named for instance FST-backup-2026-08-29.json) and lets you choose where to save it: Files, iCloud Drive, a third-party service, and so on.

The file contains the pictures you imported. Treat it as personal data: share it only with the people concerned.

Restoring

Tap Restore configuration, pick a backup file, then confirm.

Restoring replaces the configuration in place: settings, routines and pictures. A confirmation is asked before anything is modified, because the operation cannot be undone — if the current configuration is worth keeping, export it first.

Two kinds of file are refused, without changing anything:

  • a file that is not an FST backup (or whose contents are damaged);
  • a backup created by a newer version of the app — update FST, then try again.

Pictures from the backup are written back to the device. Pictures the restored configuration no longer uses — the previous configuration's, or orphaned files — are deleted right after: nothing could reach them any more, and they would otherwise pile up for good.
